On 22nd aug, 2008 iPhone was launched in India. This was the most exciting time for me because I have been waiting for iphone since the day of it’s birth.

To my dismay many of the vodafone stores was not carrying it and since had to literally run massive manhunt for this phone. After a lot search I figured it out that it was available in selected store.

Today I am a proud owner. And I don’t regret a bit on spending a bomb for this gadget. It costed me 29450 Indian rupees to own this baby.

Next up, list of apps I have loaded on my phone and it’s productivity review.

I am leaving in a jet plane and I don’t know when I will be back again.  Yes you read it right, I am going back to my country (Mera Desh) “Mother India”. I am actually writing this message form Birmingham, Alabama International airport terminal.  Right now I have passed thru all the TSA checks and waiting for my jet plane so that I can go to Chicago, then to Frankfurt and to Bangalore.

This time I don’t know when I will back to USA again as my Visa as also expired and I will have to reapply my visa and then get a project back in India which will sponsor me to back to USA. The whole process will at least give me couple of months back in India.

So cya folks and my next blog will be from India.

Buffalo – be my companion forever May 30, 2006

I got my Buffalo LinkStation Network Attached Storage (NAS) yesterday. It is a 250GB HDD with a gigabit network card. The System supports Windows, Linux and Mac off the box. It as a very nice little web admin from where you can configure the LinkStation to behave the way you want it to. It is very useful when you have multiple systems and you need a single point of stage for all your files like mine. Yes I know few of you will argue that you can setup one of the old system to be the file server, but would it work on just 17 watts of power and give the following advantage:+ Toaster like size+ Low power consumption – 17 watts+ boot time of less than 20 secs+ Web, FTP and Samba servers working out of the box+ Print server+ Expandable thru USB 2.0 ports+ No drivers required+ Backup software to backup your system to this device/appliance or should I say appliancewhite

As though this was not enough for my needs, I went and re-flashed the factory firmware to a full blown Debian system which I found @ http://www.linkstationwiki.org. Know I have my White Buffalo running:+ Apache web server with PHP, Perl and SSL support+ MySQL database with PHP and Perl support+ FTP server+ SSH server+ DynDNS client+ Samba+ HDD monitoring tools like SMARTMON, HDPARM and NoFlushI am planning to use the SSH on Buffalo thru web so that I can tunnel it thru office network. This will allow me to browse sites which are blocked by the big bad wolf (my company). This way I can still get to sites to do my research on stuff like this. If this aint cool then what is?

Bus

The only possible answers are "left" or "right". If you know the answer, reason it out why its traveling the direction you think it is travelling.

Better late than never May 23, 2006

At last I have enrolled myself for Marroitt, Hertz and Sky Miles rewards points. The idea behind it is to collect enough  points which will help me get my dad and my sister a free flight to USA, so that they can also see this country next time when I am in
USA. The only sad point is that I started it recently, if I had done this beofre I would have collected much more points. As the saying goes – Better late than never.

I have been busy with my work, hence no blogs from long time. Well I think I will be relatively free coming weeks, this will give me sometime to write my blogs again.

Till then some facts on picture file formats

JPEG:
Good for:
+ Photographs
+ Game screenshots
+ Movie stills
+ Desktop backgrounds
Bad for:
– Windows application screenshots
– Line art and text
– Anywhere where fine lines or sharp color contrast is needed

PNG:
Good for:
+ Text, line art, comic-style drawings, general web graphics
+ Windows application screenshots
+ When absolutely 100% quality is required (24 bit)
+ When alpha channel support is required
+ As a general replacement for anything that is a non-animated GIF
Bad for:
– Photos, in-game screenshots (only when quality is not important and you’re looking for small files)
– Disappointing browser support from Microsoft and others

GIF:
Good for:
+ Where animations are absolutely required
+ Widespread browser support
Bad for:
– Patented, legal technicalities
– Large file sizes compared to PNG for the same quality
– Obsolete

Georgia Aquarium April 10, 2006

Today I visited Georgia aquarium for this to happen I had to buy tickets a week before as my work colleague advice me to advance book my tickets because on weekends its usually sold out.

As I entered the Aquarium I was handed out a free Aquarium map. After a quick glance @ the map I got to know that – The Georgia Aquarium is billed as the world's largest. It is the largest because it has about 100,000 fish from 60 habitats in the more than 500,000 square foot building. It also has two Whale Sharks — the world's largest fish.

Aquarium is divided in five galleries:

  1. Tropical Diver
  2. Ocean Voyager
  3. Cold Water Quest
  4. River Scout
  5. Georgia Explorer

The main attraction for me was the Whale Sharks and the Beluga Whales. It was just awesome to see these creatures alive swimming just front of you and just an acrylic glass separating us. It’s just amazing.

The last gallery I visited was the Georgia Explorer; there I got to experience touching Star fish and other fishes there. The good thing about the gallery is that they give 15 – 20 mins breaks for the fish were you cant touch them, it was kinda cool that you are giving them rest from constantly being touch by humans.

The whole disappointment was that I was not able to see any turtles. No turtles, how can that be?

The grand finale was the 4D Theater. This was also a nice experience, it was a movie similar to “Finding Nemo” but with a very good message for all – “Don’t mess with Mother Nature”.

I recommend if you are in Atlanta and have not seen the Georgia Aquarium then leave everything as is and visit the Largest Aquarium in the World NOW!
